What does a job saving the planet look like? What do you do every day? Join our in-person event in Smock Alley on Tuesday September 10th to meet the Climate Heroes working to protect our city, our home, from the known and unknown impacts of climate change. You will have the chance to ask questions and work with them to solve a challenge facing the Dublin Local Authorities.  

This event will feature presentations, panel discussions and workshops.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is pleased to announce its ‘Empowering Business for Climate Action’ event which will be held during Dublin Climate Action Week 2024. Supported by the Local Enterprise Office, Sandyford BID and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Chamber of Commerce, the event will take place in the Dynamic Space in Sandyford Business District, on the morning of the 10th of September, from 10 am to 12:30 pm with comedian and author Colm O'Regan as the guest speaker and MC.

The Youth Conferences will be a space for secondary students to get involved in hands on sustainability activities and discussions. The Youth Conferences will be facilitated to tease out students’ ideas for climate action, while having some fun and learning a bit more about climate action.

This interactive workshop and lunch is taking place in the Holy Cross Parish Centre, Dundrum, from 10.30am-2.00pm. Expert speakers will be sharing tips on meal planning, shopping and how best to minimise food waste at home. You will learn how to properly store and extend the life of basic foods, how to use leftovers creatively to create delicious meals and how to start your very own compost at home!

Lunch will be provided by FoodCloud Kitchen, and complimentary composting caddy packs will help you continue your journey towards reducing food waste.

South Dublin County Council are hosting this guided walk & talk to recognise the beauty and value our parks provide for our health and well-being, as well as helping biodiversity flourish and in taking climate action.

Embrace nature, gain knowledge, and have fun in this engaging event!

Businesses can be incredibly effective leaders in Climate Action, fostering the transition to a low carbon economy by adopting circular and sustainable business models.  

This exhibition in Dublin City Hall uses storytelling to celebrate trailblazer companies who have used circular approaches to offer extra benefits in addressing pressing business challenges. It aims to inspire and encourage all those who wish their business or workplace to be a shining example of real climate action. All of the companies featured have taken part in the circular economy training programme, MODOS, provided through local authority to local businesses.  

The exhibition will launch on September 10th, with presentations from businesses at the launch event. The exhibition will then remain in place for the remainder of Climate Action Week. 

This workshop takes place in the Digital Hub (ID8 Studios, Dublin 8, D08 TCV4) and includes a site visit to Bridgefoot Street Park.

The workshop offers a general introduction to climate action and sustainable development. Led by Gavin Harte and Deirdre Prince, the workshop will provide participants with an introduction to climate change impacts and possible solutions while promoting climate actions at local level.

Do you want to cut down on energy costs or meet energy-saving targets? The Local Enterprise Office (LEO) Energy Efficiency Grant and SEAI grants have helped businesses make significant savings.

This in-person advice clinic with presentations and one-to-one Q&A sessions will be held in Units 5 & 6 CHQ Building, Custom House Quay. Business owners will have the opportunity to meet one-to-one with the LEO and SEAI representatives present and ask questions on how to apply for grants and understand what is eligible.

The key takeaway from this informational and sustainability advice clinic is that the businesses walk away with a greater understanding of the difference between supports from the LEO and supports from SEAI and what is relevant to their situation.

Join the energy efficiency trouble-shooting clinic for homes and small buildings taking place in the Studio at the dlr LexIcon in Dún Laoghaire. Through presentations from Codema, the Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland (SEAI) and the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU), you will learn about handling draughts, ventilation and mould, managing your energy bills, and the energy upgrade grants available.

As well as picking up free energy saving goodies, you will also be in with a chance to win one of three DIY energy upgrade hampers! Light refreshments will be served.

Join the Sustainable Life School in Ballymun Library on Wednesday September 11th for this 1.5 hour workshop. In this session participants learn what to look out for when choosing beauty care products that are kinder to the planet and ourselves, how to reduce plastic from the bathroom and create a clutter free & relaxing sustainable self-care routine. 

In this session participants come away with: 

- Easy swaps they can make in the bathroom to go plastic free 

- The "How To" on sustainable makeup, skin, hair care, hygiene and period products 

- Their own natural face scrub to bring home

Join us at the Central Library on Wednesday September 11th at 2.30pm for a one hour talk with sustainability consultant Aoife Munn on how to maximise the benefits of being in the garden for either yourself or those around you. We examine all of the health benefits of gardening and the different effects of different activities.

This 1 hour talk will take place in Marino Library on Wednesday September 11th. Sustainable Life School will shed light on what digital pollution is, how it occurs and practical tips on how to be more sustainable with our digital devices. In the last 15 minutes, participants are invited to play some old-style games to rediscover fun ways to stay away from screens and reconnect with others.

Biodiversity is our life support system but is under incredible strain, in Ireland and globally. But what is biodiversity? Why are species being driven to extinction and how does this matter to our everyday lives?

Pádraic Fogarty is author of the 2017 book ‘Whittled Away – Ireland’s Vanishing Nature’ and the 2022 podcast ‘Shaping New Mountains’. He is an ecologist and was campaign officer for the Irish Wildlife Trust. He currently writes about the biodiversity crisis for outlets in Ireland and Britain.

South Dublin County Council are delighted to team up with Cycle Clinic to provide a free bicycle service.

You will receive the Silver Service worth €75 for free.

Should you require additional parts (brake pads etc.), these will be provided at a large discount and at your own expense.

The mechanic will assess your bike with you and clarify if any replacement parts are required. Each bike will have a fully documented service listed upon collection.

Cycle Clinic will be set up in Chamber Square (outside County Hall, Tallaght Library and the Civic Theatre). Drop your bike off in the morning between 9am-12pm and the collection time will be between 3-4pm.

Join Dave Wall from the National Biodiversity Data Centre to explore the rocky shore animals and seaweeds of Skerries. Learn how to identify and record common seaweed, invertebrate and fish species on the rocky shore and how to photograph and upload your records for the Explore Your Shore! Citizen Science project to help track climate change around the Irish coast.

Location: Skerries Lifeboat Station 

Important Information: We will be on the shore, crossing slippery and uneven surfaces so please wear wellies/boots and appropriate clothing for the weather. Bring your camera/smartphone to take photos of your finds. Participants should be of a fit health to be able to cross uneven terrains.

The biodiversity artist-in-residence project seeks to use the transformative power of arts as a catalyst for conversations and new thinking about biodiversity in Dublin City Council. This project is funded by Creative Ireland, through the Creative Climate Action fund

The long-established integrated constructed wetland in Kilbogget Park provides water treatment and flood relief functions to our community, while being a thriving aquatic habitat for a large number of plants and animals. Come join us to learn more about this hard-working wetland, its history, its construction, its ecological evolution, where it is at now and its future prospects and the wider benefits it gives to our community.

South Dublin County Council are hosting this guided walk & talk to outline the incredible work undertaken for the Dublin Urban Rivers LIFE (DURL) Project.

The Dublin Urban Rivers LIFE project seeks to improve water quality. This project includes building integrated constructed wetlands. These natural water retention measures will improve the quality of receiving river water, provide flood alleviation, bioretention of particulates and nutrients, improve habitat conditions and biodiversity, and promote the relationship between green infrastructure and public wellbeing.

Join Lee from Global Action Plan to talk all things composting! This hands-on workshop will be held in the beautiful setting of Glas@ TU Dublin, Blanchardstown. It is suitable for complete beginners as well as people who have tried composting but would like help improving their compost. The workshop will give participants the opportunity to explore the following:

· Learn ways to compost, reduce waste and save money by turning organic matter into rich soil

· What’s in a healthy compost pile? – What to use and stay away from

· Understand the role of worms and other soil engineers in the soil

· Explore the use of compost as a mulch

· Get hands-on practical experience preparing materials and making compost

Public transport is a big part of our lives and will become more important as we aim to become a more climate-friendly country – but not everyone has equal access to it.

From the cost of purchasing a ticket to accessibility issues for disabled people, many people have trouble using the public transport that many might take for granted – but did you know that there are differences between men and women’s use of transport? Do we consider the Traveller community when deciding where bus stops go? Do we consider regional and rural disparities faced, such as a lack of public transport options and higher car dependency as a result, in rural areas? And what kinds of journeys are taken into account by decisionmakers when they design new bus, train, and tram routes?

Join Feminist Communities for Climate Justice, a project between the National Women’s Council and Community Work Ireland, for a thought provoking, participative session in the CHQ Building, Custom House Quay, discussing the equality issues within public transport in the face of the climate crises – and how we can design transport systems that can be used by everyone in our society. This session will include groundbreaking Feminist Climate Justice research carried out by University College Cork on how transport policy doesn’t pay enough attention to inequalities in Ireland.

Mary Collins and Winnie McDonagh of Pavee Point Primary Healthcare for Travellers Project and Claire Kenny of Independent Living Movement Ireland will contribute, speaking from their perspectives.

Feminist Communities for Climate Justice highlights the disproportionate impacts of the climate crisis in Ireland on women, girls, and other marginalised communities in Ireland. The impacts of the climate crises for present and future generations cannot be understated or ignored, and these impacts will not be felt evenly – we need to ensure that while reducing our emissions, we are also reducing inequalities.

The soil preparations involve laying cardboard and mulch covering over the mini woodland site, which in six months time, we will return to and plant the site with native tree saplings.

Mini woodlands are small, dense, rapid-growing plantations of entirely native species in an urban setting. These woodlands have an estimated 20 to 100 times more biodiversity and 40 times more carbon absorption than traditional woodlands. This technique simulates woodlands in small spaces and allows us to see them mature within our own lifetime.

This guided walk will highlight the progress made so far on this significant flood alleviation scheme, where participants can see firsthand the works being carried out. This tour will explain why the project is needed, how the works will be progressed and answer any related questions.

In this workshop we will use the Minecraft video game as a tool for children (ages 10-14) to learn about and create nature-based solutions for Fingal. This interactive session invites children to explore Fingal in Minecraft and collaboratively design their neighbourhood.

One of the goals of the project is to use games as medium for children's participation by offering site-specific Minecraft worlds based on real geospatial data. Through a fun and interactive way, the engagement process combines the use of custom analogue games and Minecraft to help children learn about complex topics, such as climate action. In this activity, players will be briefed about nature-based solutions while playing the Craft-my-Forest card game. They will then plan their interventions using a paper map. Subsequently, in an online Minecraft replica of Fingal, children will collaboratively implement their ideas in the virtual world.

The event will be held at Swords Carnegie Library, 49 R836, Townparks, Swords, Co. Dublin, Ireland.

This event marks the launch of the NBSINFRA EU Horizon project, a collaboration between Fingal County Council and University College Dublin to support active community involvement in urban planning and as such present an initial step in further activities on community engagement in the process of building the sustainable future of Fingal.

At this free recycling event, members of the public will be able to drop off their unwanted household waste electrical and electronic equipment (anything that has a plug or a battery and is at the end of its useful life).

Buzzfest is 2-day, fun-based, family event, for people in Dublin 7 who want to make this the most sustainable and climate friendly northside neighbourhood to live in. The festival is held in the gardens of St. Peter’s Church on Saturday & Sunday 14th & 15th September, and celebrates biodiversity, climate and circular economy actions that are happening in Phibsboro and beyond.  

In 2017, Phibsboro Village Tidy Towns placed a beehive in the gardens of St Peter’s Church reviving an ancient Irish tradition, ‘the Blessing of the Bees’. This led to the first Buzzfest.  

Building on the success of the festival over the past 7 years, we have a bigger and better programme of events this year.

To celebrate the final day of Dublin Climate Action Week 2024, South Dublin County Council in collaboration with National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) are hosting a Peatland Restoration Event in the scenic setting of Upper Glenasmole, in the South Dublin County Mountains. This event is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people, enjoy beautiful scenery and take meaningful climate action.

Join us for a fun, hands on and informative workshop at Portmarnock beach where participants will learn about the importance of a clean beach for marine life, our coastal eco-systems and the effects of climate change.

This event will be taking place outdoors, so we recommend bringing a rain jacket and wearing appropriate footwear for the sandy uneven terrain.  

Join Fingal Active Travel for a biodiversity cycle in Baldoyle! On this fun cycle we’ll learn about the different habitats and species in Baldoyle and why it’s so important to protect biodiversity. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a beginner come along!

Buzzfest is 2-day, fun-based, family event, for people in Dublin 7 who want to make this the most sustainable and climate friendly northside neighbourhood to live in. The festival is held in the gardens of St. Peter’s Church on Saturday & Sunday 14th & 15th September, and celebrates biodiversity, climate and circular economy actions that are happening in Phibsboro and beyond.

In 2017, Phibsboro Village Tidy Towns placed a beehive in the gardens of St Peter’s Church reviving an ancient Irish tradition, ‘the Blessing of the Bees’. This led to the first Buzzfest.

Building on the success of the festival over the past 7 years, we have a bigger and better programme of events this year.

On Sunday, you can learn how to make tote bags and wax food covers, how to build a pond, reduce food waste, use our clothes swap shop, upgrade your old clothes and take a biodiversity/climate walk around Phibsboro.
